Heipä hei! Kuten mainitsin edellisessä postauksessani, syksyn aikana sain mahdollisuuden lyhyesti esittäytyä työpaikkani verkkolehdessä. Mielestäni artikkelista tuli oikein kiva, ja siksi ajattelin, että voisin kenties jakaa sen myös täällä. Täältä siis pesee!

Toodles! As I mentioned in my previous post, during the fall I had the opportunity to briefly introduce myself in the online newspaper upheld by the organization where I worked. Since I personally enjoyed writing the article, I thought it could be fun to share here aswell! Thus, here goes!

Kuka olet? Olen Vivian, alun perin Turusta kotoisin oleva, mutta sittemmin helsinkiläistynyt ammattiviulisti, oikeustieteiden opiskelija ja Centerin harjoittelija.

Missä opiskelet? Opiskelen tällä hetkellä viimeisiä kuukausia Helsingin Taideyliopistossa Sibelius-Akatemiassa ja viimeistä vuotta Tilburgin Yliopiston Global Law-ohjelmassa Hollannissa. Syksyllä 2022 edessä odottavat taidehallinnon jatko-opinnot maailman kulttuuripääkaupungissa New Yorkissa Fulbright Finland – säätiön stipendiaattina.

Who are you? I’m Vivian, a professional violinist, law student and intern, originating from Turku, but currently living in Helsinki.

Where do you study? Currently I am completing my last months studying at the Sibelius Academy of the Arts University of Helsinki, and last year studying in the Global Law-program of Tilburg University in the Netherlands. In the fall of 2022 awaiting me are studies in arts administration in the cultural capital of the world, namely New York, where I’m headed as the grantee of the Fulbright Finland-foundation.

Miksi IPR kiinnostaa? Mikä IPR erityisesti kiinnostaa ja miksi? Taidetaustani vuoksi tekijänoikeuteen liittyvät kysymykset kiinnostavat erityisen paljon. Immateriaalioikeuksissa, ja ennen kaikkea tekijänoikeuksissa, kaksi minua syvästi puhuttelevaa alaa, taideala ja oikeustiede, yhdistyvät.

Aineettomien oikeuksien avulla voimme kannustaa luovaan työskentelyyn ja suojata luovan prosessin tuloksena syntyneitä teoksia. Osittain niiden avulla taiteellinen toiminta ja uusien teosten luominen voidaan tehdä mielekkääksi ja kannattavaksi ja siihen voidaan kannustaa. Tämä luovuuteen ja uuden luomiseen kannustava puoli kiinnostaa, innostaa ja viehättää IPR-alassa kaikkein eniten.

Why are you interested in intellectual property law? Which intellectual property right do you find particularly interesting and why? Because of my background in arts, I am particularly interested in copyright law. In intellectual property law, and especially copyright law, the two fields that I find most stimulating, namely law and arts, are combined.

Through intellectual property law we can encourage creative work and protect the outcome of creative processes. Partially through this field of law, we encourage artistic and creative activity, and make these types of projects meaningful and lucrative. This side of intellectual property law interests, excites and charms me the most, encouraging creation and creativity.

Milloin aloitit työskentelyn IPR University Centerillä? Mistä kuulit harjoittelusta? Aloitin harjoittelun elokuussa 2021, oikeustieteellisten kandiopintojeni viimeisenä vuonna. Centeriin törmäsin keväällä 2021 tutustuessani Googlen kautta Suomessa toimiviin IPR-alan yrityksiin. Kesäkuussa osallistuin Centerin järjestämään Summer Schooliin ja kuulin ensimmäistä kertaa harjoittelusta. Hain harjoitteluun, koska IP-ala puhutteli ja halusin oppia lisää aineettomista oikeuksista ja niiden parissa työskentelystä.

When did you start working at the organisation? How did you hear of the internship? I started the internship in August 2021, during the last year of my L.L.B. degree. I ran into the organisation in spring 2021 whilst doing research online in companies with an IPR-focus in Finland. In June I took part in a summer school hosted by the very same organization and heard of the internship for the first time. I applied for the internship, because I find the field of intellectual property law to be very interesting and would like to learn more about it and the opportunities involved.

Millaisten työtehtävien parissa olet työskennellyt ja millainen on tyypillinen työpäivä? Millaista työskentely on ollut? Päivittäisiin työtehtäviin on kuulunut uutisointi alan ajankohtaisista aiheista, IPRinfo-lehden toimitustyöhön osallistuminen sekä tutkimuskeskuksen tekemässä tutkimuksessa avustaminen. Lisäksi olen päässyt osallistumaan moniin Centerin lähes viikoittain järjestämiin webinaareihin ja muihin tapahtumiin, kuten IP-lounaisiin.

Erilaisten artikkelien ja uutisten kirjoittaminen verkkosivuille ja lehteen on antanut hyvän käsityksen eri aineettomien oikeuksien suojamuodoista. Alaan liittyvien ajankohtaisten asioiden seuraaminen on ollut kiva ja mielekäs tapa oppia uutta. Tutuksi ovat tulleet kaikenlaiset aineettomiin oikeuksiin liittyvät aiheet aina tavaramerkeistä brändäykseen ja patenteista mallioikeuksiin.

What has been the best part of your internship? The best part of working at the center has been the constant learning involved. Ever since day one, I’ve had the opportunity to learn of intellectual property law widely and thoroughly, to meet interesting people in the field, to network, to creatively utilise my skills and abilities and to challenge myself. A wonderful surprise has also been my great colleagues: the people keeping the Center running are fantastic, and I simply couldn’t have wished for better fellow interns!

Furthermore, it’s been fascinating to see how an organisation can increase awareness of a certain field, in this case, of intellectual property law. It’s been very enlightening to witness how a concept can be marketed and how one’s own networks can actively be expanded.

Mikä on ollut parasta harjoittelussa toistaiseksi? Centerillä ehdottomasti parasta on ollut jatkuva uuden oppiminen. Ensimmäisestä päivästä lähtien olen päässyt oppimaan aineettomista oikeuksista monipuolisesti ja laajasti, tapaamaan mielenkiintoisia alalla vaikuttavia ihmisiä, luovasti hyödyntämään omaa osaamistani sekä haastamaan itseäni. Ilahduttava yllätys on ollut myös tosi kivat työkaverit: Centeriä pyörittävät ihmiset ovat loistotyyppejä, enkä olisi voinut toivoa parempia harjoittelukollegoita.

On myös ollut hienoa nähdä, miten tietoutta tietystä aiheesta, Centerin tapauksessa IP-oikeuksista, voidaan aktiivisesti lisätä. On ollut tosi opettavaista seurata sivusta, miten konseptia voidaan markkinoida ja myydä eteenpäin, ja miten omia verkostoja voi aktiivisesti kasvattaa.

Which types of assignments have been part of your internship and what has a typical workday looked like? How have you experienced working at the Center? My daily duties have included reporting of current news in the field, participating in delivering the IPRinfo-online newspaper and assisting in the research conducted by the organization. In addition I’ve had the opportunity to participate in the many events hosted by the Center almost weekly, including webinars, live conferences and networking lunches.

Writing different articles and news for the Center’s website and online newspaper has provided me with a good understanding of different forms of intellectual property protection. Following current topics in the field has been a fun and meaningful way to learn new things. I’ve gotten well acquainted with a wide range of topics related to intellectual property law, ranging from trademarks and brands to patents and design rights.

Mikä on unelmaduuni? Haluaisin tulevaisuudessa päästä mahdollisimman kokonaisvaltaisesti hyödyntämään omaa osaamistani sekä taidealalla että oikeustieteissä. Unelmanani on toimia johtavassa tai hallinnollisessa tehtävässä esimerkiksi konserttitalossa, oopperatalossa, levy-yhtiössä tai agentuurissa. Uskon, että poikkialaisesta, myös immateriaalioikeuksiin liittyvästä tietämyksestäni olisi näissä tehtävissä hyvin paljon iloa ja uskon, että minulla voisi olla niissä paljon annettavaa.

Tämänhetkisestä melko selkeästä visiosta huolimatta tavoitteenani on pitää kaikki ovet avoinna kaikenlaisille kiinnostaville mahdollisuuksille ja pyrkiä tarttumaan niihin sitä mukaan, kun niitä tarjoutuu. Se pitää elämän jännittävänä ja innostavana – koskaan ei tiedä, mitä mahdollisuuksia ja käänteitä elämä voi tuoda tullessaan!

What is your dream job? In the future I aim to reach a point where I am able to utilize my full skillset both in the field of arts and law, including intellectual property law,. My ultimate dream is to work in a leading administrative position in for example a concert house, an opera house, a record label or an agency. I am confident I would greatly benefit from my interdisciplinary background in these types of position, and strongly feel I would have a lot to give in institutions of this type.

Despite the relatively clear vision I have at this point in time, my goal is nevertheless to keep all doors open for any interesting professional opportunities and to try to grab them as they come. I believe this is a great way to keep life interesting and exciting – you never know, which opportunities and plot twists life might hit you with!

Mitä tiesit aineettomista oikeuksista ennen kuin jouduit käsittelemään niitä? Aika vähän ja hyvin pintapuolisesti. Taideopintojen kautta tekijänoikeuteen liittyneet asiat olivat etäisesti tuttuja, ja oikeustieteellisissä opinnoissa immateriaalioikeuksia oltiin lyhyesti sivuttu. Summer Schoolin ja Centerillä tehdyn harjoittelun myötä aineettomien oikeuksien maailman laajuus on kuitenkin avautunut minulle ihan uudella tapaa. Se on ollut monella tapaa tosi kiehtova kokemus.

What did you know of intellectual property rights before working with them? Very little, and whatever I knew, I knew on a fairly superficial level. Copyrights have been briefly dealt with in the course of my arts degree, and intellectual property law has been mentioned during my legal studies. However, through the IPR Summer School and this internship, the fascinating extent of intellectual property rights has opened up to me in an entirely new way. It’s been a wonderful experience to have.

Mitä teet vapaa-ajalla? Vapaa-ajalla keikkailen Kansallisoopperan orkesterissa, Radion sinfoniaorkesterissa ja Helsingin kaupunginorkesterissa. Oikeustieteellisten opintojen myötä suhde musiikkiin on mullistunut: näen soittamisen ja musiikin alan ihan uudesta näkökulmasta, enkä tiedä milloin olisin aikaisemmin nauttinut soittamisesta ja arvostanut alaa yhtä paljon kuin nyt. On mahtavaa voida työpäivän jälkeen hoitaa kouluhommat loppuun ja sitten lähteä soittamaan maailman hienointa musiikkia valtavan lahjakkaiden ihmisten kanssa. Koen olevani tässä suhteessa tosi onnekas ja etuoikeutettu ja olen tämänhetkisestä elämäntilanteesta tosi kiitollinen.

What do you do during your free time? Currently I also work at the orchestra of the Finnish National Opera, and have done gigs in the Radio Symphonic Orchestra and Helsinki Philharmonics. During my legal studies my relationship to music has transformed: I see playing and the field of music from an entirely new perspective, and don’t know when I last would have enjoyed playing and appreciated the industry as much as I do now. It’s been incredible to be able to finish school assignments after work, and to then leave to play the greatest music in the world with incredibly skilled and talented people. I find myself to be so lucky and privileged in this sense, and am endlessly grateful for the current state of my life.

Inspiroiva ihminen. Inspiroidun monista ihmisistä ja koen löytäväni melkein kaikista sellaisia piirteitä, joista voisin oppia tai joita voisin omaksua. Centerillä on esimerkiksi ollut hauskaa seurata vetovastuussa olevan henkilökunnan dynaamista, rennolla ja hyvällä meiningillä sekä asiantuntevalla otteella tekemää yhteistyötä. Sellaisen otteen haluaisin itsekin osata ottaa omassa työelämässä tulevaisuudessa!

Who inspires you? I find many people inspiring and feel like I can find features to learn from in almost everyone. At the Center it’s for example been super fun to see the dynamic, relaxed, professional and positive way the staff works and collaborates. This is exactly the kind of attitude also I would like to take in the course of my professional endeavours!

Kenelle suosittelisit harjoittelua? Suosittelen harjoittelua ihan kaikille IPR-alasta kiinnostuneille, ennen kaikkea alalla tehtävästä urasta haaveileville. Harjoittelu tarjoaa mielestäni ainutlaatuisen aitiopaikan suomalaiseen IP-alaan, enkä voi kuvitella parempaa tapaa päästä IP-alan töihin kiinni. Olen tosi iloinen ja kiitollinen kaikesta täällä oppimastani ja toivon, että harjoitteluohjelma jatkuu vielä pitkään tulevaisuudessa.

Who would you recommend the internship for? I would encourage everyone and anyone interested in the IP-field to apply for this type of an internship, in particular if you’re dreaming of a career in the sector. I believe the internship provides a unique vantage point to the Finnish field of IP law, and cannot imagine a better way to get started with a career in the field. I am so happy and grateful for this opportunity, and hope that the internship program continues for years to come.
